From Greg Smith, GMC, USCG (ret):
To all of my fellow members of the Yorktown Chapter,
It has been a true honor to serve along your side with the chapter since 1995, and continuosly since 1998. Serving several terms as a member of the BOD, Vice President, President, and chairing a few committees, it has been a pleasure to walk by your side. Not only as a fellow Chief, but as one of those who has stepped up to accept the responsibility of joining AND serving the Assoc. I had no bigger honor than being your servant as Pres. In 1999.
The chapter has come far and we have several President’s Outstanding Chapter awards to show for it, but we need more. We need more of you to reach out to the non members and try to see what their stance is and show them the good things we do, and provide that reason for them to join us as well. We still have a few representing many to get things done. Being a member is great, but being a proactive member is what we should strive to be. There is much good to be done, but we can only continue to succeed as long as the 20 or 30 who help stay with it. It can be difficult to dodge “Burnout” getting over the frustration brought on by those who like to be heard or like to help us spend our funds, but are absent when we need to raise the funds to do so. Donate 10 hours a year and see what is accomplished.
I look forward to visiting when I can and trying to get to a couple of meetings a year at least to share and help as I can. But I challenge each of you to become familiar with “Robert’s Rules.” As well as reading the resolutions each year to truly see how the Association must function in order to continue as a business. These things are not fun or exciting, but it is crucial to truly be an asset. Attend a National Business Meeting to see why we have to follow the policies we do.
It is bittersweet that I say good bye as I relocate to North Carolina. It is time to go back and be with family, but it is hard to depart from something that has been so much a part of me for the last 16 years, and 13 straight. I wish you the best. My membership will continue in this chapter as I will not be close to another.

The National Wreaths Across America Event was held on 11 December 2010, 1200, to honor veterans at Arlington National Cemetery and over 400 other National cemeteries across the country. Their mission: "Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach our children the value of freedom" help all of us understand and appreciate the sacrifices that many make for our country.
Lead by DCCS Del Hayes, several members of the Yorktown CPOA Chapter and several other volunteer organizations contributed to an outstanding turnout to honor the ceremony of "Wreaths Across America" at the Yorktown National Cemetery.

This will continue to be an annual sponsored event by the Yorktown CPOA Chapter. For more information on the event around the country and how you can be part of this honorable event click on the link at the left of the page.
Special Thanks to DCCS Del Hayes and many members of the Yorktown CPOA Chapter for volunteering to spearhead this successful event in respect for those who have gone before us...

On October 28, 2010, the Yorktown Chief’s Mess hosted a dinner as the capstone event of the Fall 2010 Chief’s Call to Indoctrination (CCTI) at the Port of York. We were honored to have Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard (MCPO-CG), ret. Vince Patton as the guest speaker for the event. Nine Indoctrinates were recognized at the dinner for successful completion of the Indoctrination process and were ceremonially pinned as Chief Petty Officers; OSC Joseph Ayd, MKC Jonny Bone, DCC Todd Bontrager, MEC Richard Gonzalez, MKC Wesley Johnson, OSC Edgardo Mateo, MKC April Storle, MKC Devon Truelove and BMC Jennifer Zercher.
The CCTI is recognized as a traditional ceremony and conducted according to the guidelines set forth in Chapter 21 of the Personnel Manual, M1000.6A and MCPO-CG Standing Order One. It is an opportunity for a Chief Petty Officer to participate in a time honored tradition to gain a deeper understanding of the significance and meaning of their advancement. The Theme for this year’s CCTI is “CHIEFS: Lead With Character – Grow Through Action”. To reinforce the Theme during the CCTI process, the candidates raised money for charitable causes, volunteered for community service, studied Coast Guard and military history, networked with the Chief’s Mess and completed a High Ropes Course Team Building event. The process culminated in a day of symbolic tests, during which important lessons were learned by the candidates. The final event was the dinner, where the new Chief’s were welcomed to the Mess.

On Saturday, 16 October 2010, members of the Yorktown Chapter and students from across the Training Center joined with members of the other armed forces to honor our World War II veterans during an Honor Flight. Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices. They transport the vets to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill. Chapter members and students were in attendance for a pre-departure ceremony and then lined the road as the vets drove off. The Yorktown Chapter was happy to play a small part in honoring these heroes.
