Author Lamar Jolly's motivation behind the book is to offer encouragement, hope and inspiration to young men and women. In the opening pages, Chief Jolly wrote: "While the book may be read by many current or former members of the Coast Guard, I am pointing it toward young people from all walks of life - people who, like me, grew up in a normal but humble setting and wanted more challenge and opportunity than I could see in my immediate future."
Chief Jolly served approximately 6 years as a member of the Regular Coast Guard then transferred to the Reserve for 4 years. Chief Jolly has had a 40-year career in real estate, developing projects worth millions of dollars. The heart of the book is about five of Chief Jolly's heroes - three of them Coast Guardsmen: RADM Louis M Thayer, USCG; RADM Raymond H. Wood, USCG; CDR Orland D. French, USCGR; Dr. J. Walter Martin, shipbuilder, pastor and evangelist; and Edwin A. Joseph, real estate entrepreneur and philanthropist.
Chief Jolly is "not afraid to show his humanity and humility ... and he shows us that behind our best laid plans is a hand we cannot fully explain ... a hand that will guide us to a place that when we reflect on our journey, we'll see just how many lives we touched," wrote RADM J. Scott Burhoe, USCG, in the books' introduction.
